Netgear Orbi system has a primary device known as a router and secondary devices known as satellites. The router connects to the modem and the satellites connect to the router and create a virtual WiFi mesh. You can set up the Orbi system using the Orbi app or web interface. During the setup process, you might have observed lights on the Orbi devices. If you see purple light on your Orbi device and are wondering what it means to have this color on the Orbi, then going through this post will be informative for you. Stick to the read.
Netgear Orbi Purple Light: Meaning
There are two LEDs on each Orbi device. One is the Power light and the second is the Ring light. The power light tells you about the power status and the Ring light signifies the working status of the particular Orbi device.
The purple or pink color will appear on the ring of either the router or the satellite. A purple color simply means an issue with the internet connection.
If it is on the router this means the router has no internet connection. And if you see the satellite’s ring light purple, this means it has no backhaul connectivity with the router or it has no IP address.
The further sections talk about what you can do to turn the purple color on the Orbi devices. When everything is fine and the router and satellites are ready to be used, the ring light is off.
Orbi Purple Light: How to Fix?
Let us now shed light on the remedies that you can try to turn the purple ring light off. There are two cases:
Case1: Purple Light on Orbi Router
Fix 1: Check Ethernet Connection
Begin with examining the cables and wires. The Ethernet cable used to connect the router to the modem has to be thoroughly checked. This is when you have made a cabled connection between the two devices. If you find any cuts on the cable then either try fixing the cable or the better option is to replace the cable with a new one.
While you are doing this, we recommend also having a look at the ports in use. Maybe you have inserted the cable in the wrong ports or the cable is loosely inserted. It is suggested to gently remove the cable and clean the ports using a soft brush and make the connection again.
Fix 2: Bring Devices Closer
There is a possibility that the Orbi router is connected wirelessly with the modem. In that case, if the router is outside the modem’s range, then also you will get internet issues because the devices are having communication problems. Hence the Orbi router ring light is purple. Unplug the router from its current power outlet and plug it somewhere closer to the modem. Observe the light. It should no longer be purple.
Fix 3: Inspect the Electricity Supply
A poor power supply can also be responsible for an unstable internet connection. Verify the same. Check the power sockets in use. Both the router and the modem should be receiving an adequate power supply.
Fix 4: Contact ISP
There could be some internet issues from your ISP end. Contact him and get help. Once the internet issue is fixed the Orbi purple light will turn off automatically.
Case 2: Purple Light on Orbi Satellite
Fix 1: Check the Connection
You should be certain the Orbi satellite is securely connected to the router. If you have made a cabled connection then check the cable and ports in use. Also, check the power supply.
Fix 2: Bring it Closer to the Router
Try reducing the distance between the Orbi router and the satellite. They should be within close proximity such that they have smooth communication.
Fix 3: Resync the Devices
In case the purple light does not get fixed, you should try syncing the devices. You can manually sync them using the Sync button available on them. The devices should be fully booted up while you sync them. Press the Sync button on the router and within 2 minutes press the Sync button on the satellite. They should be able to communicate with each other and the purple light should turn off.
The Final Note
The aforementioned tips will help you get rid of the Orbi router and satellite no internet trouble. If the issue does not get fixed then perform a power cycle of the whole network. Power off all the devices, ie. router, satellites and modem. Remove all the cables and wires. Wait for some time and again connect the cables. Switch on all the devices. The sequence should be modem first, second router and then the satellites. This will surely help. Finally, access the Orbi login page and update the firmware to the latest version.
